In the history of Ayurveda dating back to Atharvaveda (1500 BCE),its encounter with modern science is a very recent event. Beginning in the 16th century CE with Garcia da Orta’s study of plants used in India’s traditional medical practice, scientific research employed serially plant taxonomy, pharmacology and natural products chemistry in understanding the pharmacologic basis of traditional therapeutics. In the twenty first century, molecular biology and immunology provided new tools to study the concepts and procedures in Ayurveda. This initiative termed Ayurvedic Biology is research in biological sciences based on cues from Ayurveda. Examples will be discussed. Organised by Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan
